The words must and should are among the most demotivating things we can say to ourselves. They imply that you must or should do something simply because it is expected of you — by others, society, or yourself. They are like self-criticism and lead to stress and anxiety. And we all know that this interferes with our routine and stops us from doing what we need to do.

Even with our to-do lists, our avalanche of shoulds and musts bury what we really want to do. If you notice consciously, you’ll be shocked at how often you say should and must. I know I am shocked at myself!

So, the next time you catch yourself must-ing or should-ing yourself, try changing that to ‘want’.

“Maybe I should take that road” — change to “I choose/want to take that road”

“I should/must do this” — change to “I want to/choose to do this”

The difference is — giving yourself a choice. ❤ And that’s great, right?

Let’s work towards eliminating the words should and must from our vocabulary! No need to drag ourselves down!
